Wildflower Season in Exmouth

Following winter rainfall, the red earth surrounding Exmouth bursts into colour as hundreds of native wildflower species emerge across Cape Range National Park, Shothole Canyon and the rugged landscapes surrounding Ningaloo. With more than 630 recorded flowering plant species, the Ningaloo region offers one of Western Australia’s most unique wildflower displays.

When is Wildflower Season?

Wildflowers can begin appearing as early as June, but the best displays are generally seen between July and October. The exact timing varies each year depending on rainfall, with a good winter often producing spectacular blooms across the region.

Wildflowers to Look Out For

Purple Mulla Mulla (Ptilotus exaltatus)

One of the region’s most recognisable wildflowers, the Purple Mulla Mulla stands out with its soft, fluffy flower spikes in shades of pink and purple. These hardy plants thrive in the arid conditions around Exmouth and often create stunning displays against the red landscape.

Green Bird Flower (Crotalaria cunninghamii)

Perhaps Australia’s most unusual wildflower, the Green Bird Flower looks remarkably like a tiny bird in flight. Native to northern Australia, it’s one of the species many visitors hope to spot during their time in Exmouth.

Sturt’s Desert Pea (Swainsona formosa)

Discover Yardie Creek: A Hidden Oasis

Tucked within the rugged limestone ranges of Cape Range National Park lies one of the region’s most spectacular natural features – Yardie Creek.

While many visitors come to the Ningaloo Coast for its famous reefs and beaches, Yardie Creek offers something completely different: a peaceful gorge, towering cliffs, rich wildlife, and a permanent waterway that winds through the heart of the range.

A Rare Permanent Water Source

Yardie Creek is the only permanent water source in Cape Range National Park, making it a vital habitat for wildlife in this otherwise dry landscape.

The creek flows through a dramatic limestone gorge before meeting the ocean near the park’s western coastline. A natural sandbar at the mouth of the creek helps trap water within the gorge, creating a calm and sheltered environment that supports fish and birdlife year-round.

The result is a stunning contrast: deep blue water framed by steep red and cream-coloured cliffs that rise sharply on either side of the gorge.

Wildlife Around the Gorge

Because of its reliable water source, Yardie Creek attracts a surprising amount of wildlife.

Visitors may spot:

Black-footed rock wallabies navigating the steep cliff faces
Ospreys and sea eagles soaring overhead
Emus wandering through the surrounding bushland
Lizards and other reptiles basking in the warm sun
Fish species such as rock cod and milk fish in the clear creek waters

The Yardie Creek Gorge

The gorge itself is one of the most dramatic landscapes in the park.

Over millions of years, water carved its way through the limestone plateau that forms the Cape Range. Today, the cliffs rise steeply above the creek, creating a narrow channel of calm water between rugged rock walls.

This landscape forms part of the only elevated limestone plateau on Australia’s North West Coast, with the range reaching heights of over 300 metres.

Hidden beneath the surface of the plateau is an extensive network of caves. More than 700 have been recorded in Cape Range, with many more believed to exist. Most are vertical solution pipes that can extend deep underground and sometimes provide shelter for animals.

Walking and Exploring

Yardie Creek is a wonderful place to slow down and take in the natural surroundings.

Visitors can:

Walk along the Yardie Creek Nature Walk, which offers incredible views over the gorge
Explore the creek crossing and nearby coastal areas

The lands and waters around Yardie Creek are part of the traditional country of the Baiyungu people, Thalanyji people and Yinigurdira people, who have cared for this region for thousands of years.

Cultural Conversations – Learning with Rachael Cooyou

Cultural Conversations – Cultural Awareness

Recently, our team stepped away from the bus seats and onto Country.

Exmouth Bus Charter completed Cultural Conversations – Cultural Awareness Training with Baiyungu Elder, artist and cultural educator Rachael Cooyou. The training was supported through 50% funding from the Department of Energy and Economic Diversification under the Local Capability Fund (LCF), which also included photography by Vee from Blue Media Exmouth.

What we gained extended well beyond professional development.

Welcome to Wanarnggura

Rachael welcomed us to Wanarnggura — Bayungu Country in the Exmouth region of Western Australia.

She spoke about sovereignty and the history of Country, about Elders as Cultural Authorities, and about the ongoing responsibility Traditional Owners carry to care for land and sea.

The Bayungu people have lived along the shores of Nyinggulu (known today as Ningaloo Reef) for around 40,000 years, gathering bilyguru (fish), majun (turtle), yardiyarra (dugong) and other seasonal foods. This knowledge of tides, seasons and marine life has been passed down through generations.

We also learned about Cultural Protocols, including the importance of being welcomed to Country and respecting Men’s and Women’s Places.

Some knowledge is shared publicly. Some remains protected. Understanding that distinction is essential.

On Country

Together, we visited Vlamingh Head Lighthouse, a place many visitors know for its sweeping ocean views.

Long before the lighthouse was built, these headlands were used for food gathering, ceremony, navigation and teaching. Elevated coastal sites allowed careful observation of tides, stars and animal movement — knowledge systems refined over thousands of years.

We also visited a second location of deeper sacred significance. With guidance from Rachael, we approached respectfully and listened carefully.

It was a reminder that tourism operates on living cultural landscapes, not just scenic ones.

Supporting Our Guides

The training was designed to help our guides deliver tours with confidence and respect. Staff learned:

What they can and cannot say when sharing Indigenous stories
How to introduce tours acknowledging Traditional Owners and Country
Correct pronunciation of local names and words
The stories behind Rachael’s Land and Water artworks on our buses
How to communicate the history and significance of local sites

This ensures visitors experience Bayungu Country with understanding and respect.

Land and Water – Stories on Our Buses

Many people recognise Rachael’s artwork travelling across Exmouth on our buses.

That collaboration is through her business, Rae-Wendy Creations, and is separate from the cultural training she delivers as an Elder.

She has created two works for us: Land and Water. The Land artwork features kangaroo, echidna, goanna and emu — spiritual totems and teachers. The Water artwork includes turtle and whale — powerful sea beings connected to sustenance, migration and story.

“These animals are celebrated in songs, dances and artworks,” Rachael explains. “They’ve guided us for generations, showing us where to find water, where to shelter, and how to live respectfully with nature.”

Alongside imagery by Tash Allen (@oashyphoto), these artworks now travel throughout the region each day. They carry a deeper significance for our team.

Sharing Damper, Sharing Responsibility

Rachael brought her “brother” (first cousin) and his partner, Leeann, continuing the practice of passing knowledge from one generation to the next.

The day concluded with homemade damper. Delicious native wattle seed and saltbush with cheddar (these were a hit!), shared with jam and honey.

Sharing food together reinforced the importance of relationship, trust and connection — values that sit at the heart of cultural continuity.

Our Commitment

This was not a compliance exercise.

It strengthened our understanding of the responsibility we carry as operators on Aboriginal land.

We are grateful to Rachael for her leadership and generosity, and to Vee for respectfully capturing these moments.

Perched high above the coastline inside Cape Range National Park, Vlamingh Head Lighthouse delivers panoramic views over Ningaloo Reef and the North West Cape. On a clear day, you can see the reef system stretching for miles.

But sunset? That’s when it truly shines.

Golden cliffs, pastel skies, and the reef glowing beneath you. Bring a camera… or just sit and take it in.

Even if you don’t snorkel, simply floating in that water is magic.

3. Explore Yardie Creek Gorge

Yardie Creek is one of Exmouth’s most unique landscapes: a permanent water source cutting through towering limestone cliffs.

You can walk the Yardie Nature Walk (free) for incredible views over the gorge and surrounding Cape Range. Keep an eye out for:

Black-footed rock wallabies
Ospreys and sea eagles
Euros and red kangaroos

It’s peaceful, dramatic, and distinctly Exmouth.

Where is the Jurabi Turtle Centre?
