1. Watch the Sunset at Vlamingh Head Lighthouse
If you only do one free thing in Exmouth — make it this.
Perched high above the coastline inside Cape Range National Park, Vlamingh Head Lighthouse delivers panoramic views over Ningaloo Reef and the North West Cape. On a clear day, you can see the reef system stretching for miles.
But sunset? That’s when it truly shines.
Golden cliffs, pastel skies, and the reef glowing beneath you. Bring a camera… or just sit and take it in.
Local tip: Arrive 20–30 minutes before sunset to secure a good viewing spot.

2. Swim at Turquoise Bay
It’s no secret that Turquoise Bay is one of Australia’s most beautiful beaches.
Crystal-clear water, powdery white sand and vibrant coral just metres from shore make it a must-visit. The famous drift snorkel allows you to float gently with the current over coral gardens and among tropical fish.
Even if you don’t snorkel, simply floating in that water is magic.
Local tip: Visit early in the morning to avoid crowds and stronger winds.

3. Explore Yardie Creek Gorge
Yardie Creek is one of Exmouth’s most unique landscapes: a permanent water source cutting through towering limestone cliffs.
You can walk the Yardie Nature Walk (free) for incredible views over the gorge and surrounding Cape Range. Keep an eye out for:
- Black-footed rock wallabies
- Ospreys and sea eagles
- Euros and red kangaroos
It’s peaceful, dramatic, and distinctly Exmouth.

4. Visit Charles Knife Canyon
For rugged, outback-meets-coast scenery, Charles Knife Canyon is unbeatable.
The drive up gives you sweeping views over Exmouth town, the gulf and the vast red ranges. At the Thomas Carter Lookout, you’ll feel like you’re standing on the edge of the world.
It’s especially spectacular at sunrise or sunset — the colours are next level.
Local tip: Check road conditions before heading up, especially after rain.
